I have a friend who is an artist. And by artist I mean she has the most creative, fun, genius mind! She is a photographer and graphic designer and this is only the start of her abilities.
Recently, she and her Assistant came up with an idea for The Art Experience. With this, a client comes in and on a blank canvas, they write words, phrases, draw pictures, etc. Whatever pertains to their particular topic! For some it could be that a new baby is coming or a marriage has happened. Or even a divorce. Think of the days when girl’s would burn up their photos and such of an old boyfriend! Painting words on a canvas is not only better for the environment, it is probably a wee bit safer as well!
In my case, I had just opened a new business with my husband. We already owned a bbq restaurant but decided to venture into a new concept and opened a breakfast/lunch cafe with cajun/southern foods. We decided to create a piece that would be in our restaurant and a reminder of who we are, what we stand for, what we experienced starting a brand new concept from the ground up and what we hope for!
I went to Julie’s office and there was a large blank canvas in front of me. I wasn’t sure where or how to start but she kept assuring me that there was no wrong way to do this. So, in the very center of the canvas I wrote (in pencil) “God”. I know that seems cliche’ but God is the focal point of our lives. We are Jesus Followers and we want our business and lives to reflect that. We don’t always succeed (you know….that pesky human element) but we really want our business to honor God! So, in the center He went.
Next, I focused on our family. This is our method of making a living. This benefits our family. It puts food on the table and pays the utility bills. Family is right up there next to God!
Success was another word I added. We want to be successful. We opened on a side of town that doesn’t get a booming amount of business for any of the restaurants around so we knew it would be tricky. But we wanted our first one to be on our side of town. In our community that we love so much.
Stress was added to the board. Yes, we’ve been stressed opening this business. It was a long process getting through all of the inspections and getting all of the inspectors on the same page. What. A. Process. So when I started painting, I took bright red painting and scribbled over “Stress”. I wanted it gone. I knew it had been a big part of opening the business and now it was time to say goodbye. For now, anyways.
Community was added. As I mentioned above, we love our community. We’ve lived here for just over 11 years now. I confess…I wasn’t thrilled moving to Alabama even though my family was here. But I love it here. It’s beautiful, people are wonderful, and Huntsville is a great city that is becoming more cultural and progressive daily!
Serve. We serve people in this business. But we want to do it because it’s what’s in our hearts, not out of obligation or necessity. Serve. Not servants, but people who serve others.
There were several other words I put on the canvas. And all kinds of paint colors and textures and squiggly lines and dots and stars and whatever I wanted. And then Julie took over and made a masterpiece that proudly hangs in my restaurant.
Come by Beignet Cafe and you will notice this beautiful piece displayed proudly behind our cash stand. It is tall, colorful and perfect.
